MORE than 450 straw-bales, 40 tonnes of compost and over 7,000 plants will be used as part of a ‘grow your own food competition’ to take place in Bootle.
Organisers of the unusual event, which will take place next week, are looking for teams of green-fingered enthusiasts to take part in the competition with prizes on offer.
Teams who enter the free Bale Beautification contest will be given 30 straw-bales to turn into a shape of their choice.
They will then cover their crafted structure with soil and plants, also provided free, and prizes will be awarded to the team which comes up with the best design.
They will be left to grow and later in the year the team whose plants flourish best will be named the winners.
The competition gets under way next Tuesday, August 11, from 12 noon to 3pm at the HQ of Safe Productions, on Waverley Street.
It is the brainchild of Christine Leung of Lotus Brook Ltd and is being supported by local organisations Regenerus, Sefton New Directions and Safe Productions.
Christine is bringing over 450 straw bales, 40 tonnes of compost and more than 7,000 plants for the competition.
And she has also secured a grant from the Regenerus Ace Fund to pay for these items to ensure there will be no cost at all to the teams who enter.
Christine said: “This competition has been designed as an innovative way of introducing people to the enjoyment and many benefits there are in growing your own food.”
Regenerus Ace Fund Co-ordinator, Eve Money, said: “We’re delighted to be able to fund this competition which will involve people who live and work in south Sefton joining forces to support a very worthwhile green initiative.”
Sefton New Directions Chief Operating Officer Penny Fell added: “This is a great way for the whole community to get involved in growing delicious fruit and veg, and for New Directions to showcase the gardening talents of the people we support.”
A number of teams have already entered the competition including One Vision Housing, Sefton New Directions, the May Logan Centre, People First, Centre 56 and Safe Productions.
However, entries are still being accepted. For more information entrants should contact Christine Leung on 07961 917895.
