Merseyside residents are being invited to learn sewing and dressmaking skills for pleasure or for profit on a free course that begins in Bootle early next month.

South Sefton Development Trust has places available on its festive-themed Sew Happy course which starts on Tuesday November 4th.

The course is being run in partnership with Hugh Baird College and will provide one day of training a week for six weeks, organised to fit in with school hours.

The course is open to people with some machine sewing skills, and to complete novices, and will help participants to make gifts or decorations for the festive season or an outfit for Christmas day.

The venue is the South Sefton Development Trust’s fully equipped dressmaking studio at the Investment Centre on Stanley Road in the heart of Bootle town centre, where all machines and materials are provided. Childcare places are also available.

Previous participants have been full of praise for the Sew Happy course, highlighting the advice and guidance they received from tutor Jenny Reid, and also saying that the opportunity to make new friends was an unexpected bonus.

South Sefton Development Trust Chief Executive, Cate Murphy, commented: “We’re delighted to be running our Sew Happy course in partnership with our colleagues at Hugh Baird College for the first time.

“It’s ideal for people who want to learn sewing and dressmaking purely for pleasure, and for those who want to save money by learning how to make and repair their own clothes or home furnishings.

“The fact that participants will be able to make use of their newly learned skills in the run-up to Christmas is a bonus,” added Mrs Murphy.

Sew Happy is available free to Merseyside residents aged 19 and over who are currently not signed up for any other adult learning course this year.
