Making climate action more accessible – May 2026

We’re really enjoying being partners in the new project led by People First Merseyside (PFM) and funded by the National Lottery Climate Action Fund.

Over the next five years, the £1.2million ‘It’s Our Planet Too’ project puts people with learning disabilities at the heart of climate action and tackles a major gap in the environmental movement: the lack of accessible information and opportunities for the learning disability community.

While the climate crisis affects everyone, people with learning disabilities often face significant barriers to taking part in climate action. This project will break those barriers down through a massive partnership involving local organisations – the Gateway Collective, Groundwork, Growing Sudley CIC, Grow-Wellbeing CIC, Lantern Company, Regenerus and the Conservation Volunteers.

Through the project, PFM Climate Champions will take part in partner activities to learn about food growing, composting, biodiversity and gleaning and foraging, to create accessible resources to help people with learning disabilities understand climate change and take practical action in their everyday lives.

After helping sow wildflower seeds in Poets Park, PFM participants have visited St Leonard’s Community Garden and also Poets Park to see the wildflowers starting to bloom and are regularly joining the Taking Root in Bootle Friday Tidy team to look after local green spaces.
